The commercialization of the Internet during the 1960’s brought about a change in virtually every facet of modern human life, especially business. It gave rise to a myriad of changes in the way companies operate and became a gateway to the entire world, accessible through one’s fingertips. Aging with the Internet, cyberslacking is a web-based byproduct of procrastination and is currently sweeping the globe. It refers to the act of accessing any non-business related web site on company time while maintaining the appearance of being on task. Like any tool, the web can positively and negatively affect a company’s productivity. Cyberslackers most frequently visit sites related to news, gossip, social networks, porn, games, personal investments, banking, music downloads, shopping, and many others. Naturally, most managers will be concerned with the loss of productivity, potential legal liabilities, and a waste of company resources. However, other managers believe in allowing employees to maintain a healthy balance of work and personal life through cyberslacking because it reduces personal stress and provides a break from mundane tasks. Either way, the Internet has become a modern day playground for businesses and cyberslacking is rapidly becoming the new national past time. The line between healthy cyberslacking and Internet abuse on company time is crossed when an employee becomes obsessively distracted. In this post I will explore the benefits of cyberslacking, discuss the symptoms of Internet addiction, describe the risks attached to cyberslacking, and explain what managers can do to alleviate the problems related to cyberslacking.

Concept Video: Intent, Choice, Difficulties, Creative Elements and Insights
Concept in 60 Seconds: Reflection
Intent- My original objective when learning about this assignment was to create something useful for presentations at my current marketing internship. When facing time constraints, I knew I had to dive into another concept to complete the assignment by its due date.
Because I enjoy music more than anything, I figured that’d be a good place to start. The possibilities are endless with music, so I dug deeper to generate a more specific concept. I have a number of friends who rarely make it to concerts with me. I get my tickets ahead of time before they sell out, but most of my friends do not take such action. So afterwords when they (and my family) ask me how the show was, there’s almost no way of explaining what it was like without talking too much/too little. Sometimes it’s better for technology to relay that kind of experience because humans can rarely provide a true testament toward life-changing musical events. This is where video can communicate what I cannot, especially considering I’m one person and the video features a sold-out crowd. It can better bridge the gap between one’s senses and his/her imagination. Seeing video footage of live energy rather than hearing about it second-hand allows an individual to explore his/her own thoughts about the content or generate curiosity about the topic at hand. This was the funnel of mind work that eventually landed me to explore the concept of a BASS HEAD.

Just wait
I have thoroughly enjoyed brainstorming ideas for the “Concept in 60 Seconds” assignment. At first, I really wanted to come up with a promotional video for my company to use in presentations but the firm works at a snail’s pace. Then I wanted to define the concept of bass. I spun my wheels thinking about how broad that is. But I think I have finally settled on a concept that I can communicate with the footage I have… and that is to define a “Bass Head”.

Brainstorming: Concept in 60 Seconds
-BASS-
On October 27, 2010 I attended a sold-out concert in Bloomington, Indiana at the Bluebird Nightclub. Lorin Ashton, widely known as Bassnectar, performed from 11:00pm -2:30am and absolutely melted the venue. This was the first time I had seen him play live after worshiping his music for roughly two and a half years. The main reason I’ve been lured to his music is his perfect delivery of high and low frequency, reverberating bass lines or what he likes to call “omni-tempo maximalism”. It completely engulfs my senses. His followers are commonly referred as ‘Bassheads’… and well, I suppose I fall into that category.
